The 2017 Subaru Impreza, available in showrooms now, is all-new from the All-Wheel Drive tyre contact patch to the more stylish body. But there is more to this compact sedan and hatch than just that…
This Subaru marks a lot of firsts for the Subaru Impreza.
It’s the first to ride on the stiffer, stronger, safer and all new Subaru Global Platform that will eventually underpin most Subaru models. This platform was developed to accommodate electric and hybrid powertrains. Thanks to greater use of high-strength steel, stronger welds, it can absorb 40 percent more collision energy while stiffness is up 70 percent. Allowing for more precise tuning of the suspension and more precise application of electric power steering.
The new Impreza will be powered by a revised 2.0 litre, four-cylinder boxer engine that now features direct-injection. The engine will be more fuel-efficient and slightly more powerful at 115kW, which is 5 kW more than the current 2015 Subaru Impreza. The chassis will handle well with a revised suspension that Subaru claims reduced body roll by 50 percent compared to the previous model. The compact also have improved straight-line stability, helpful for those long road trips or commutes.
Subaru reports the structure is 70 percent more rigid thanks to more use of high-strength steel. This makes for a noticeable improvement in cabin noise, harshness and ride quality. So, thicker glass, fewer cabin pass-throughs and more sound insulation allowing for a quieter, more comfortable ride. The new platform is also bigger allowing for a larger exterior, resulting in a roomier interior with ample front and rear legroom.
Like previously, the new Impreza will be offered across four trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0iL, 2.0Premium and 2.0iS. The 2.0iS trim now available in both sedan and hatchback. Standard 60/40 split fold down rear seats and a tilting and telescoping steering wheel. All models loaded with safety features, from increased outward visibility to better energy flow managements that routes forces through the chassis more safely in a crash. It also comes standard with a new touchscreen infotainment system 6.5 inch in the 2.0i and 8.0 inch in the 2.0iL and above, all with Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity. So you can pair up-to your phones mapping system even in the base 2.0i model.
All models except the 2.0i have Subaru’s intelligent Eyesight Driver Assist camera system standard.
The system utilizes the 2x windscreen mounted colour camera to constantly monitor the road in front to detect obstacles and automatically apply the brakes in an emergency. The Eyesight system also has Adaptive cruise control, Lane departure warning and a host of active brake and throttle pre-collision preventative systems.
All models come with smart key and push start, along with 17’ Alloy wheels and electric handbrake. The 2.0iS model, which gets revised suspension tuning, active torque vectoring, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights and LED daytime running lamps, a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, sunroof, push-button start, and keyless access, heated front seats and leather seats all round, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and steering-responsive headlights that adjust as the vehicle navigates through curves, blind-spot monitoring, and rear traffic alert.
Subaru Australia have pushed out the service schedule to 12 months or 12,500km, bringing the cost of ownership down considerable over the previous model, they also offer capped price servicing and for buyers who take delivery prior to December 31st 2016, they will receive a 5 year unlimited km factory warranty.
The new platform is safe, sound, very stiff and roomier on the inside than previous models. AWD is great addition and is standard across the range, with the added security of the Subaru sure footed driving experience whether the weather is dry and dusty or cold and wet. With all the features, it stacks up extremely well against the competition, the competitors have been put on notice, and this is a great small car.
